Spicy Tangy Okra & Turmeric Infused Lentils (Daal)

Growing up, I didn't like okra, but as an adult I love it! Sometimes I need traditional Indian food - it's my go to comfort food!



Ingredients:

  • Okra (about 30) split vertical

  • 2 large shallots chopped

  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder or cayenne

  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • 1-2 teaspoon dry mango powder or lemon juice

  • 5-6 garlic cloves

  • Optional: curry leaves

  • 1 tablespoon oil (to heat in the pan)

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pan

  2. Once hot, add mustard and cumin seeds

  3. Once they splutter add garlic and curry leaves. Let it cook but make sure it does not burn

  4. Add okra and mix well

  5. Give it a couple of minutes, add all the spices and let it cook. Mix well

  6. Add salt to taste

  7. Add chopped shallots, cover and lower the flame. Let it cook

  8. Adjust your salt and lemon juice per your taste
