How To Build An Indian Buddha Bowl aka Indian Thali

Dr. Sonal Haerter

This Buddha bowl / Thali is so incredibly yummy! It gives you a balanced plate filled with fiber, complex carbohydrates, protein and good fats. It keeps you full and your taste buds will be super satisfied!

I grew up in India eating traditional Indian food! Thali essentially means plate. Traditional Indian Thali has bread / roti (similar to a tortilla), white rice, Daal (lentils), 1-2 sides of vegetables, Raita - yogurt and cucumber combo / salad , pickle (fermented mango / lemon/ vegetables). I love a traditional Thali, but as I have gotten older I have swapped some of my simple carbs to healthier ones.

Ingredients:

  • Rice / Bread swapped by plain cooked quinoa

  • Daal - Yellow split lentils cooked with cumin, turmeric and salt. No oil

  • Green cabbage cooked with English peas, potato, green chili and cumin

  • Spicy roasted cauliflower (baked)

  • Salad made from cucumber, carrots, chopped arugula, crushed peanuts and salt (so yummy!)

  • Pickle - traditional pickle has a ton of salt and oil. This one is homemade given to me by one of my patients. Oil free and minimal salt. She uses fresh tomatoes from her garden!

How would you build your Buddha Bowl?
